Singer and actor Billy Ray Cyrus, Miley Cyrus’s father, revealed in an interview with GQ magazine that the series Hannah Montana, where he shared the spotlight with his daughter, had ruined their family life.
“The damn show destroyed my family,” the 49-year-old country singer said about the Disney production that made his daughter an international star. “And I sit there and go, ‘Yeah, you know what? Some gave all.’ It is my motto, and guess what? I have to eat that one. I some-gave-all’d it all right. I some-gave-all’d it while everybody else was going to the bank. It’s all sad.”
Billy Ray said he believed people in Miley’s entourage compromised his relationship with his daughter by preventing him from offering her advice when she was embroiled in several controversies.
“I’m scared for her,” Billy Ray said. “She’s got a lot of people around her that’s putting her in a great deal of danger. I know she’s 18, but I still feel like as her daddy I’d like to try to help. Take care of her just a little bit, to at least get her out of danger.”
By this, he referred not only to the recent scandal arising from a video posted on the web showing Miley smoking salvia, but also to the shocking photos of Miley that were published in Vanity Fair in 2008 in which she posed nude, wrapped only in a sheet.
Billy Ray Cyrus, who had success with his song Achy Breaky Heart in the 1990s, also expressed his regret: “I should have been a better parent. I should have said, ‘Enough is enough — it’s getting dangerous and somebody’s going to get hurt.’”
Last October, Billy Ray and Miley’s mother, Tish, began divorce proceedings after 17 years of marriage.
