X Factor’s Cher Lloyd says she’s “proud” to be a gypsy and goes as far as suggesting that the criticism she receives is a consequence of racism.

After revealing that she lived in a caravan with her parents, Cher says “That’s something I’m very proud of. I’m never going to forget my heritage, no matter what.”

The X Factor contestant also admitted being called “pikey,” by her classmates when she was in school.

“I hate that people can say you’re a pikey and it’s not even considered racist. Romanies haven’t had much of a chance to speak up or be in the public eye – I want to make a start.”

This week, Lloyd posted a response to recent insults directed at her on Twitter: “Its okay yano. The people who support me are the ones who really matter :D (sic)”
