The American Music Awards, a ceremony which annually recognizes the best American music artists, were held on Sunday. Teen star Justin Bieber won 4 awards alone.
“I can’t stop smiling,” said the 16-year-old, who had won awards for artist of the year, favorite pop album, breakthrough artist and favorite male pop artist.
Justin wanted to share his glory with Usher, who is “not only [his] mentor, but also [his] best friend and [his] big brother”.
Usher helped discover Bieber about 18 months ago and signed the youngster to a record deal. The two embraced on stage and Usher told reporters backstage: “I don’t cry that often but I did, and I enjoyed it.”
Usher won two awards: one for best soul / R & B male artist and one for his album Raymond V. Raymond.
During his speeches, Bieber repeatedly thanked his fans.
“I’m from the smallest town in the world of, like, 30,000 people,” he said as he accepted the breakthrough artist award. “I never thought this was possible.”
Other winners include Eminem, who also received two awards, one for his allbum Recovery and one for best rap / hip hop male artist.
Lady GaGa, not surprisingly, was best female artist of the year, the Black Eyed Peas won best pop / rock group of the year and Taylor Swift was named best female country artist.
