LeAnn Rimes’ cover shot on Shape sparked a controversy this week as the editor-in-chief Valerie Latona first apologized to readers for choosing the singer for the cover and then retracting her words and saying she stood by her decision.
According to contactmusic.com, Latona explained in an email to readers that it was a mistake and that putting her on the cover was to show how we are all human “You are all in good company… as you all agree Shape has made a terrible mistake in putting LeAnn Rimes on the cover,” the editor wrote in the email. “Please know that our putting her on the cover was not meant to put a husband-stealer on a pedestal-but to show (through her story)… ”
At first, in response to Latona’s email in which she apologized for featuring LeAnn Rimes on the cover, the 28 year old star gave her version of the story on her Twitter page: Just so all my fans know, I’m getting to the bottom of this. It’s the first I’ve heard of this. Shape is throwing me a party next week as a thank you and a congrats for being on their cover for the third time. I find this very contradictory.”
It seems that some readers complained that she was not a good choice as a role model. LeAnn had an affair with married actor Eddie Cibrian while being a wife herself.
Later Latona released a new statement in which she said that her “personal letter” to subscribers was taken out of context. She also mentioned that only 40 out of 6 million subscribers complained about the Rimes cover.
Latona also revealed her reasons for retracting her initial statement: ”I stand by the fact that Leann’s story and her courage and strength in the face of so much adversity is compelling.”
