Mary J. Blige on childhood molestation with VH1’s Behind The Music

The R&B singer gave a candid interview in which she talked about her troubled past.

The Grammy award-winning singer has revealed in the interview that she was molested and the age of 5.

“When I was five years old I was molested and just, you know. I remember feeling, literally right before it happened, I just could not believe that this person was going to do this to me.”

Soon her anger turned into a feeling of blaming herself: “That thing followed me all my life. The shame of thinking my molestation was my fault. It led me to believe I wasn’t worth anything.”

During the episode, Blige credited her husband Martin Kendu Isaacs for helping her get over alcohol problems.

“The best thing you could do to me? Challenge me to challenge myself,” she said.

“I stopped drinking. It was will power. It was prayer. It was really hard. But, I cared so much about [Isaacs], I didn’t want to be just this alcoholic burden on him. He doesn’t deserve for me to be some, you know, slum-bucket alcoholic, and so I took responsibility and I cleaned up, as much as I could. But it was hard.”

The singer also expressed gratitude to P. Diddy for supporting her throughout her career.

“If it wasn’t for him I probably wouldn’t have made it this far in my career, because he pushed me, challenged me to challenge myself.”

Mary J. Blige will highlight her acting skills in the upcoming film musical Rock of Ages, starring Tom Cruise and Catherine Zeta-Jones. In the movie, she plays a strip club owner.
