Michael Jackson, number one richest dead celebrity

According to Forbes, Michael Jackson is leading the top of the richest celebrities who are no longer alive.

The authors of the article announced on Monday that the American singer has “earned” 275 million dollars during the past year.

The income “realized” by Michael Jackson was higher than that achieved by the 12 stars ranked below the number one position all together.

Jackson came out third in last year’s top, with revenues of 90 million dollars.

Michael Jackson was 50 when he died last year in his Los Angeles home on June 25, shortly before the start of a series of 50 concerts that he was to perform at the O2 Arena in London.

What the singer has left behind are his three children and debts of 500 million dollars.

But the fund that manages the star’s wealth has generated revenues worth of millions of dollars after Jackson’s death, from record sales, the marketing of the documentary “This Is It”, copyrights, contracts for new albums and a show staged by Cirque du Soleil in Las Vegas (USA).

Elvis Presley came in second place, “earning” 60 million dollars last year, an amount that came from the tickets sold to tourists that visited the Graceland farm, the singer’s former residence in Memphis, a show staged by Cirque du Soleil and from more than 200 license agreements and merchandising.

J. R. R. Tolkien, author of the novel series “The Lord of the Rings” which was turned into movies by director Peter Jackson, occupied the third position in the Forbes top, with revenues of 50 million dollars, and Charles Schultz, creator of the characters Charlie Brown and Snoopy, came out fourth, with incomes of 33 million dollars.

John Lennon, the former member of The Beatles band, who would have turned 70 in 2010, ranked fifth with earnings of 17 million dollars.

Elvis Presley, J. R. R. Tolkien, Charles Schultz and John Lennon were also featured in last year’s top which was dominated by the fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent, with revenues of 350 million dollars, money obtained from the auctioning of his personal objects. But Yves Saint Laurent no longer appears in this year’s top, neither do the writer Michael Crichton nor the artist Andy Warhol.

The top 10 richest celebrities who are no longer alive is completed, in order, by Swedish author Stieg Larsson, creator of the “Millennium” series (18 million dollars), children’s literature author Theodor Geisel, known as Dr. Seuss (11 million dollars), scientist Albert Einstein (10 million dollars), George Steinbrenner – owner of the Yankees baseball team (8 million dollars) and composers Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein (7 million dollars).

This top monitors the profit obtained by deceased celebrities and it includes, among others, musicians, writers, actors and composers.

In order to be included in this top a deceased star must have “earned” at least 5 million dollars in the previous year.
