The idea of a role model can take many forms, from humanitarian actions, donations, charity concerts to personal experiences of life on how to get over “demons” in our lives.
Through their position, celebrities can be opinion leaders, they can influence and help on various levels. Here are some examples of young female stars who deserve the title of role model.
Besides performing, they give a lesson of life in many ways, trying to educate and inspire through their own example.
Selena was named a UNICEF ambassador in 2009, becoming the youngest celebrity to receive this title (she was only 17 years).
The singer visited helpless children in Ghana, drawing attention to the problem the kids there are facing.
Few may know that Selena’s mom, Mandy Cornett, was 16 when she gave birth.
Selena has no siblings and her parents divorced when she was 5 years old. Her mother remarried 10 years later.
Selena has opened up in interviews about her mother and the purity ring she’s wearing, calling it, “a promise to myself, to my family and to God… People say, ‘She’s trying too hard.’ I’m not trying to be anybody but myself.”
It was her biological father who gave her the ring when she was 12 and she has since tried to keep her promise.
“People say, ‘Oh, she’s got a purity ring, she’s got this, she’s got that – she’s totally just trying to be a good girl. It’s so weird.”
Gomez credits her mother’s strength for inspiring her to pursue her dreams and remain successful.
“My [role model] is first and foremost my mom,” she says.
Taylor Swift has donated 6,000 books to the library in her home city after finding out about its financial problems and that they can’t afford to buy new books.
Library Director Frank Kasprowicz said the donation is the largest made to the library in recent years.
“These days, I’ve been trying to classify my thoughts into two categories: ‘Things I can change,’ and ‘Things I can’t,’” Swift wrote in a website post on the donations. “It seems to help me sort through what to really stress about.”
The singer is also generous to her fans. She once gave autographs for 15 hours straight. After CMA, Taylor patiently took her time to please her admirers.
“I’m having a blast,” she said. “I’m surprised my legs aren’t hurting yet. I’m surprised that there’s no aching going on. I’m really having so much fun because like we’re all having a very good time today. They’re all telling me really sweet stories.”
Miley used her celebrity to help Haiti. Two years after the earthquake that destroyed everything, there are still hundreds of thousands living in tents. Celebrities tried to convince fans to get involved and help the J / P Haitian Relief Organization.
The former Disney star joined Zooey Deschanel, Edward Norton, Rainn Wilson, LL Cool J, Soleil Moon Frye and Sean Penn in helping Haiti. Below you can see a video of their humanitarian actions.
In 2011, Miley was involved in the Starkey Hearing Foundation that provided hearing aids to children in Haiti. The singer, accompanied by her mother in this humanitarian mission, helped kids put their hearing aids and was glad to see that the gadgets improved their hearing.
In November 2010 Demi checked herself into rehab voluntarily to treat bulimia, anorexia and depression. She had problems with bulimia and self-harm when she was younger because other children used to bully her.
The fact that she admitted her mistakes and managed to overcome them is praiseworthy.
Demi has spoken out against bullying and opened up in interviews about how this affected her in her childhood.
She has perform at various events and has urged teens to be more considerate of others in a bid to stop bullying.
The Twilight star has donated a pair of autographed shoes to an organization that fights against sex trafficking.
Kristen played a runaway prostitute in “Welcome to the Rileys” and has talked in interviews about how it managed to affect her.
“If you do a movie, especially this one — it’s not the easiest thing subject-matter-wise — it stuck with me,” she told MTV News.
Because of the impact the role had on her, Kristen has said that she hopes to set up a charitable organization to help women in a similar situation to her character.
The 20-year-old is reportedly planning to establish a network of halfway houses to offer support to victims of sex trafficking.
“That would be amazing,” she said. “Right now, it’s the thing I feel most connected to.
