The winner of last week’s poll about the best female live singers (Demi Lovato, Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez and Avril Lavigne) is Demi Lovato with 2501 votes.
Two weeks ago (Christina Aguilera, Adele, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga and Alicia Keys) the winner was Lady Gaga.
As we promised, every week we will have a series of five singers and for each poll you will have a week to vote. Only five singers will be the finalists.
This week we propose Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Madonna and Kylie Minogue.
Mariah Carey has won numerous awards, including two Grammys in 1990 for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Best New Artist for her debut single “Vision of Love.”
Carey has received the Billboard Award for “Artist of the Decade” and the World Music Award for the most spectacular sales.
She has entered history as the only female artist to have 18 #1 songs on the US Billboard Hot 100 charts.
In 2003 she embarked on a world tour for the promotion of the album “Charmbracelet” for which she swapped the Diamond Record, certifying sales of over 100 million copies worldwide.
Her tenth studio album, “The Emancipation of Mimi,” released in 2005, was produced by The Neptunes, Kanye West and Jermaine Dupri and became the best selling album of 2005 in the United States.
As far as her voice is concerned, Mariah is able to cover all the notes from alto to soprano and produce a 5-octave vocal range.
The highest note she has reached thus far is a G#7 during two live performances of “Emotions” in 1991, and also an A2 in her hit “My All.”
At only 48, Whitney Elizabeth Houston passed away, but in the eyes of many she is still an idol and inspiration for generations of musicians.
“You wait a lifetime for a voice like that,” Clive Davis said at Whitney Houston’s funeral.
Whitney was the first artist to have seven consecutive hits at the first position in the charts, and her cover of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” became one of the biggest hits in music history. The song won first place in the tops, sold over 16 million copies and Houston was awarded a Grammy for “Album of the Year”.
The single “You Give Me Good Love” was Whitney’s first hit, occupying leading positions in the R & B charts. The next three songs, “Saving All My Love For You” (Grammy winner), “How Will I Know” and “The Greatest Love of All ” held the top position in the pop charts.
The Whitney Houston album scored number one in the album charts, sold over 13 million copies, becoming the biggest selling debut album by a female artist.
The next album, Whitney, debuted at number 1 in the album charts, selling over 9 million copies. The first four tracks on this album, “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)”, winner of a Grammy award, “Didn’t We Almost Have It All”, “So Emotional”, “Where Do Broken Hearts Go” reached the first position in the charts.
In 2009, she was included in the Guinness World Records as the most awarded woman of all time.
Céline Dion holds a leading position in the history of music, her album sales exceeding 100 million worldwide.
Céline became successful in 1992 when she recorded a song for the soundtrack to the animated Disney movie “Beauty and the Beast” with Pebo Bryso. The song brought her an Oscar for best soundtrack and a Grammy.
Her music was influenced by several genres from pop to rock, gospel and classical music.
When she announced her withdrawal from the music industry in 1999 (Dion has decided to retire for a period to spend more time with her family) she already had many super hits in her record, including “I’m Your Angel” and “My Heart Will Go On” from the soundtrack to the Titanic.
In 2002 she released the album “A New Day Has Come” and two years later, at the World Music Awards, she received the award for sales of over 100 million albums.
The singer is known for her unique vocal abilities, her vocal range reaching up to 5 octaves.
Madonna is the winner of multiple Grammys, a Golden Globe for her performance in Evita and an Oscar for best song, “You Must Love Me”, a song on the film’s soundtrack.
Debuting in the early 1980s, Madonna quickly became the most popular solo singer of all time, with sales that exceed 270 million records worldwide.
Her second album, Like a Virgin, was released in 1984 and Madonna famously performed the song of the same name at the MTV Video Music Awards where she came out of a cake dressed in a wedding dress. The song remained six weeks on the charts at # 1.
In 1985, she earns her international fame with the hits Material Girl and Crazy for You. In 1986 she released True Blue which became the top selling album of all time with 22.5 million copies.
The album Ray of Light has brought her various awards including a Grammy.
Madonna has reinvented herself over time, her voice bears a unique sound and her shows are always spectacular.
The single “I Should Be So Lucky” reached number 1 in Australia and became the song that pushed Kylie up in the worldwide charts.
Throughout her career, Kylie has released hit after hit: “Got To Be Certain”, “Je Ne Sais Pas Pourquoi”, “Especially For You” (in duet cu Jason Donovan), “It’s No Secret”, “Hand On Your Heart”, “Wouldn’t Change A Thing”, “Never Too Late”, “Tears On My Pillow”.
The albums “Kylie Minogue” and “Impossible Princess” were released under the British signature Construction and brought not only a new image, but also a mature sound, evolved and more experienced.
Kylie attributed the change to the lead singer of the band INXS, Michael Hutchence. The new Kylie received the vote of confidence from some big names in music. Nick Cave, The Manic Street Preachers and Pet Shop Boys have offered to write songs for her and suggested collaborations.
“Spinning Around”, the first singlke from the album Light Years, debuted at number one both in Australia and the UK. The success was repeated with “On A Night Like This” and “Kids” (a duet with Robbie Williams).
In 2001, the hit “Can’t Get You Out of My Head” became her first #1 in the USA since the 80s.
