Rebecca Zahau’s cell phone records reveal intriguing calls and messages

The cell phone records of Rebecca Zahau were released Saturday.

ABC

Zahau’s cell phone logs show a series of phone conversations and text messages she traded in the hours leading up to her death at the Spreckels mansion in Coronado, which has been ruled a suicide by police.

According to AT&T mobile phone billing records obtained by CBS 8, Zahau listened to her voicemail for two minutes at 12:50 a.m. on July 13, about two hours before her estimated time of death.

Rebecca also spoke with her sister, Mary Zahau-Loehner, three times and exchanged six text messages in less than ten minutes.

She later received a text message from Nina Romano, the twin sister of Jonah Shacknai’s second ex-wife, Dina Shacknai, Max’s mother. Romano said she wanted to come to the mansion.

“I just wanted to talk to her about the accident,” Romano told News 8 about the text message she sent to Zahau, several hours before her death. “And so I sent her a text message that said, ‘Hey are you around? I’d like to come by,’ and I never heard from her. She never responded to me.”

Adam Shacknai, the brother of Zahau’s boyfriend Jonah Shacknai, called 911 that morning at 6:48 a.m. to report Zahau was hanging nude from the mansion’s second-story balcony.

According to law enforcement, Jonah had called Rebecca shortly before midnight on July 12.

Earlier this month San Diego County Sheriff’s Sgt. Dave Nemeth said at a news conference: “We know from the investigation that (voicemail) message that was left on her phone was to inform Rebecca of Maxie’s grave condition and imminent death,”.

Anne Bremner, the lawyer representing Zahau’s family in their attempt to reopen the case, told Radar Online that there is no record of Jonah calling Rebecca in that time period: “There is no call from Jonah Shacknai’s cell phone to Rebecca Zahau’s, which is another cause for concern, and yet another reason for law enforcement to re-open the investigation.”

“The message, whatever it was, is forever erased,” Bremner said. “They’re pinning this entire suicide conclusion on a phone message that no one has ever heard.”

However, AT&T spokesperson Georgia Taylor gave an explanation for why the call doesn’t appear on Rebecca’s cell phone: “When someone calls you and you do not pick it up, or the call was not received, it goes straight to voicemail,” Taylor said. “It is not logged on your bill per se.”

In addition, Zahau’s family is also using a newly released video in their attempt to get the case reopened. The stills from the video obtained by Radar Online show that the pink rope Zahau allegedly used to hang herself isn’t visible.

“This is another reason to reopen the case. The fact that the door is closed and the rope isn’t there raises more questions in the investigation where they incorrectly found Rebecca’s death to be a suicide,” Bremner said.

Also, previous reports showed that the mystery deepened as police released details about Rebecca’s death after it was found that they had been hidden from the public.

For example, initial reports made no mention of bruises on Zahau’s scalp or of the message in black paint on a door in the mansion that read, “She saved him, can he save her.”

The finding that she committed suicide was also questioned when it was discovered that she had blood on her inner thighs and that a T-shirt had been wrapped around her neck and stuffed in her mouth.
