Andy Irons’ death: dengue or methadone?

Andy Irons was found dead Tuesday night in a hotel room in Dallas (Texas). The surf champion, aged 32, was suffering from dengue. An autopsy was performed today to determine the cause of death.

Dengue …
The victim’s family announced in a statement that Andy Irons “had contracted dengue fever”, an infectious disease transmitted by mosquitoes. For this reason he had withdrawn from a race in Puerto Rico last weekend.

… or methadone
Several Hawaiian newspapers, including the Honolulu Star Advertiser, evoke another track: the medical examiner raised the possibility of an overdose of methadone, an analgesic used as a substitute by heroin consumers.

Andy Irons has dominated the world of professional surfing between 2002 and 2004, winning three world champion titles. The American surfer died at the age of 32. His body was found in a hotel room in Dallas, Texas, where he made his stage before going home on the island of Kauai in Hawaii. The exact causes of death were not known Wednesday morning. An autopsy must be performed in the day.

The surfer was married. His wife, Lynda, is expecting their first child in December.
