Apple’s iTV could be called iPanel, analyst says

Rumor has it that Apple is planning to release its long-rumored smart TV in the Q4 of 2012.

According to Jeffries & Co. analyst Peter Misek, the new device could be called the iPanel.

“We now believe the iTV could be called “iPanel” as it is far more than a TV; it is a display, gaming center, media hub, computer, home automator, etc. Also, Apple would likely have difficulty getting naming rights from the UK TV network ITV,” Misek wrote, as quoted by CNET.

The analyst also upped his price target on Apple shares from $699 to $800 based on “increased confidence” that Cupertino will launch the product this year.

In addition, Misek predicts that the iTV will retail for $1,250 and bring in 30 percent gross margins.

The analyst bases his assumptions on his recent checks in China which show that specialty components, including polarized films, filters, and IGZO displays, for an iTV are reportedly being shipped in “small quantities” to the company’s suppliers.

Apple’s doubling the size of its North Carolina data centre has led Misek to believe that the company could be working on iPanel content.

Finally, he believes production is likely to begin next month, with sales of between 2 million and 5 million by the end of the year.
