The Cupertino tech giant has reportedly asked its suppliers to prepare a 5-inch Retina display screen for an iDevice that would launch next year.
According to a Chinese source cited by Japanese site MacOtakara, Apple is hard at work on a new device carrying a screen of an intermediate 5-inch size.
The website reported on Wednesday that this product will have a screen resolution of either 1,600 pixels by 960 pixels, or 1,280 by 960 pixels.
The source didn’t clarify whether the handset would be closer to the iPhone or iPod touch than to that of the iPad or a different product family.
One thing is sure: this mystery device won’t be the iPhone 5 because its release is planned between June and the month of September 2012 and also because Apple’s next smartphone is rumored to have a 4-inch screen.
Recent rumors claim that Apple is developing a mini version of the iPad, offering a 7.85-inch display with the same 1024×768 non-Retina resolution of the first iPad and iPad 2.
