Rumors that Apple has acquired advanced 3D mapping display tech company, C3 Technology, have been confirmed.

According to reports, the mapping company uses once classified military targeting technology to create 3D maps.

Apple has shown a growing interest in mapping companies after purchasing Web-based map company Poly 9 in 2010 and Placebase, a Google Maps competitor, the previous year.

The acquisition is rumored to be worth around $240 million and many speculate that the Cupertino company plans to reduce its dependence on Google technology for the Maps application on the iPhone.

The site PC Mag writes that Poly9 and C3 Technologies’ 3D mapping technologies are expected to appear in a future version of the iOS Maps application.
