Facebook won’t shut down on March 15

A false rumor has been circulating on the Web this weekend, claiming that the Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg, wanted to close the books and remove the site altogether.

The news proved to be a hoax coming from Weekly World News.

That such news should be published in the Weekly World News doesn’t surprise anyone. What makes it puzzling though is the speed at which this piece of information spread, creating a real buzz in the social media.

Several sites, including the Internet security firm Sophos, reacted quickly to deny the news and wondered about the trends of Internet users to exchange information without checking its veracity.
