The event marking the launch of the new iPad has begun.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has taken the stage and is talking about the impressive number of iDevices, up to 172 million, that have been sold worldwide.

Add a whopping 62 million iOS devices in Q4 2011 to that figure.

Cook also talks about Siri, which many expect to be featured on the new Apple tablet. He also announces that iOS 5.1 will be available as of today for all iDevice owners.

The Apple head announces the launch of a new Apple TV model that will have 1080p capabilities.

And now the star of the show: presenting the iPad 3! The new Apple tablet essentially looks the same as the iPad 2. In addition, it features a Home button, Retina Display and a 2048 x 1536 resolution!

The iPad 3 comes equipped with an A5X processor with quad-core graphics. 4G LTE support is offered on the new tablet, as it has long been rumored.

As for Siri, the assistant won’t be featured on the new iPad. Instead, the next-gen tablet offers voice-dictation, marked by the presence of a microphone icon on the software keyboard.

Users just need to tap on the button and voice their commands. Although it doesn’t offer the same quality as Siri, the feature does bring forward the possibility of the implementation of the assistant on the next iPad.

Japanese language support will be included.

“It is amazing. We’ve taken it to a whole new level, and we are redefining the category that Apple created with the original iPad,” Cook says.

“We’ve taken it to a whole new level, and we are redefining the category that Apple created with the original iPad.”

“This presents a problem for us in presenting it to you. For the first time, an iPad has a higher resolution than this entire display behind you… that’s a fun challenge.”

The new iPad is 9.4mm thin and weights 1.4 lbs, different from the previous version which was 1.33 lbs. and 8.8mm thick.

Versions and prices are announced: $499 for the 16GB model, $599 for the 32GB one and $699 for the model featuring 64GB.

Cook officially announces that over 200,000 apps for iPad are available in the App Store. He also says that the apps for iOS are much better built and designed than the ones for Android.

Previous rumors are confirmed as it is announced that the iPad 3 will come in two different models for AT&T and Verizon since they use different bands.

Before we find out the name of the new iPad, iPhoto is announced, an app offering users the possibility to edit with multi-touch, professional-quality effects, brushes.

The app includes Photo Journal and Photo Beaming options and supports up to 19 megapixel photos.

As for the name of the device, it seems the new iPad will be called simply “the new iPad,” and not the iPad 3 or iPad HD as Apple fans have been speculating.

Other features of the new iPad include: the A5X processor is built on the old A5 that is currently powering Apple’s devices.

The third-gen Apple tablet comes equipped with a 5 megapixel rear camera, the same that is available on the iPhone 4S.

An iSight camera is placed on the front of the tablet, allowing users to make FaceTime calls at a high resolution.
