Chipmaker Qualcomm introduced its fifth generation Gobi chipset for mobile computing yesterday.

Many speculate that the chipset could equip both the iPhone 5 and iPad 3.

The gadget offers the widest support on the market, with TD-SCDMA, TD-LTE, LTE support on FDD and TDD networks worldwide and embedded GPS capability, as well as HSPA+ and EV-DO.

The company noted in a press release that the chip is compatible with Windows 8 and Android devices, including the Snapdragon dual-core and quad-core processors and x86 platforms.

The current Gobi chipset can be found on the iPhone 4S and in the past Apple has been known to use Qualcomm chipsets for its iDevices.

According to 9to5mac, the chipset could power the long-awaited iPhone 5 and iPad 3.

An iPhone 5 running the Gobi chip would help Apple using the same hardware for all territories and all carriers which normally use incompatible radio technologies.
