On Wednesday Apple unveiled the iPhone 5, thinner and lighter than its predecessor, even if it comes with a larger screen.

Apple vice president Phillip Schiller announced the device has a thickness of 7.6 millimeters and weighs 122 grams. It is 18% thinner and 20% lighter than the iPhone 4S.

The camera with an 8-megapixel sensor takes photos 40% faster than its predecessor and has a dynamic mode for low light. The font-facing FaceTime camera is now HD.

Another feature of the camera allows users to combine multiple images for a panoramic view.

The new iPhone comes with a 4-inch Retina screen that is larger than the current model and displays a new row of icons.

The display was built using in-cell technology with integrated touch sensors that allowed for a thinner screen.

The new A6 processor is twice as fast as the previous A5, 22% smaller and more efficient.

Improved battery life will offer 8 hours of 3G or LTE talk time or browsing or 10 hours of Wi-Fi browsing or 225 hours of standby time.

A major change of the new iPhone is the new dock connector. The new port features an 8-signal design, adaptive interface, improved durability, it is reversible and 80% smaller.

Schiller stated that Apple will also offer an adapter for older accessories.

Also, the new iPhone has three microphones instead of two. They are located at the back, front and bottom of the device.

New headphones called EarPods were introduced by Apple: they are supposed to fit all sizes of ears.

The handset is compatible with high-speed 4G LTE networks, using a single chip for voice and data.

Apple also installed a new mapping software, improved the voice assistant Siri and integrated Facebook into iOS 6.

The device can be pre-ordered starting September 14 and will be in stores in nine days in the US, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Australia and Japan.

The list will be expanded to 20 additional countries a week later and the handset will be available in 100 countries by the end of the year.

Prices in the US start at $ 199 for the 16GB version, with 32GB, and 64GB models for $ 299 and $ 399.
