iPhone 5 rumors: larger 4-inch screen won’t cause problems, developers think

Based on reports that the next-generation iPhone could boast a larger 4-inch screen, developers don’t think the change will affect the device in any way.

Last week, the Wall Street Journal and Reuters stated that Apple is looking to expand the screen of his next smartphone.

The publications wrote that the display will measure at least 4 inches and that the next iPhone will bring a 30% increase in the current 3.5 inch display and a new design.

Erica Ogg at GigaOm cites several developers who believe that Apple won’t make it more complicated to design applications for a modified iPhone screen.

Lenny Rachitsky, CEO of social discovery app Localmind, said he doesn’t think Apple will “pull an Android and fragment the device market unnecessarily.”

“We haven’t put a lot of thought into it yet, partly because we assume Apple isn’t going to pull an Android and fragment the device market unnecessarily. If they do, they must have a really good reason to do it, and we’re confident they’ll provide tools to make it easy to migrate. The last thing they want to do is put more friction in front of developers,” Rachitsky says.

Sam Shank, the CEO of Hotel Tonight, doesn’t believe Apple would change the aspect ratio or pixel density of the display.

Shank added that in the case of a screen size change, the device would only become a bit wider but not much taller.

“Changing the aspect ratio would be a lot of work for development teams. We found that maybe 50 percent of iOS development is [spent] in layout,” he said in an interview last week.

“If we had to do two versions of that, the current aspect ratio and a new aspect ratio, and had to lay it out again, that would add considerably to our development time.”

The iPhone 5 is rumored to sport a significantly modified design.
