iPhone 5 rumors: next iPhone to work both on 3G and 4G networks

iPhone 5 will be released in the fall and according to one analyst, Apple’s next smartphone will work both on 3G networks, as well as the upcoming 4G LTE network.

Analyst Shaw Wu expects the iPhone 5 to feature the technology already used in the iPad 3 which is compatible with 3G networks that can achieve speeds of up to 43 Mbps and with 4G LTE networks that can achieve speeds of up to 72 Mbps.

4G support will be meant to spark customers’ interest into upgrading to the new iPhone.

However, Apple will also have to try to appeal to Chinese clients, given China’s status as the world’s biggest smartphone market, Wu says.

The analyst estimates that the device will work with China Mobile’s TD-SCDMA 3G network.

So far, China Mobile and China Unicom have been testing 4G LTE support but Apple has to ensure 3G compatibility in order to stay competitive in the Chinese market.

Wu also believes that the handset will sport a new form factor and a larger screen, besides 4G LTE support.
