iPhone 5 rumors: NFC capabilities not likely

Rumors about the introduction of an NFC chip in the next iPhone have never ceased to appear.

A thorough analysis of the latest iPhone 5 leaks was made by technology blog Anandtech.

The conclusion they reached was that the future handset is “unlikely” to feature NFC technology.

“Given the primarily metal backside of the new iPhone, it’s highly unlikely that NFC is in the cards for this generation. In fact, given the very little space at top and bottom dedicated to those glass RF windows, you can almost entirely rule it out,” the site wrote.

The “mystery chip” that appeared in earlier photos could be related to a touch and display controller for the device’s in-cell display panel.

The site also stated, “NFC operates on the 13.56MHz ISM band, which has a relatively large wavelength, at 22.1 m. Making a traditional dipole antenna that radiates at all, given the constraints of a smartphone package, is thus a big challenge, considering that smartphones are maybe 5-inches tall at maximum, to say nothing of the supposed upcoming iPhone’s longest linear dimension.”

In response to the analysis made by AnandTech, The Loop’s Jim Dalrymple simply stated, “Yep.”

Rumors of NFC functionality for the next iPhone were fueled by the introduction of the iOS 6 “Passbook” application.
