It’s official: Mac App Store will open January 6, 2011

Apple announced today that the Mac App Store will be released on Thursday, Jan. 6. By bringing the experience of the revolutionary App Store to Mac OS X, Mac App Store will allow to discover, install and update Mac apps more easily than ever.

Mac App Store will be available in 90 countries since its launch and will offer paid and free apps among categories such as education, games, graphics & design, lifestyle, productivity and utilities.

“The App Store revolutionized mobile apps,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We hope to do the same for PC apps with the Mac App Store by making finding and buying PC apps easy and fun.”

Mac App Store lets you browse among the latest apps, see the editorial team’s favorites, conduct research among the different categories and read reviews and ratings of customers. Like the iPhone, iPod touch and the iPad, you can buy, download and install apps in just one click and start using them immediately.

The purchased apps can be used on your personal Mac and updates are available directly via the Mac App Store, allowing you to easily update all of your apps. Mac App Store is available for users of Mac OS X Snow Leopard as a free download via the Update feature of the software.
