Microsoft already building Surface 2 tablets

A successor for Surface is reportedly under construction.

According to job adverts posted on the Microsoft Careers site between June and August, the company is “currently building the next generation” of “devices that fully express the Windows vision.”

The job listings were first spotted by TechRadar and they go like this:

“The Surface Team focuses on lighting up Microsoft experiences with touch first computing. A fundamental part of our strategy is having desirable and powerful devices that enable the experiences people want, and elicit their excitement. Creating these devices involves a close partnership between hardware and software engineers, designers, and manufacturing. We are currently building the next generation and Surface needs you!”

The most interesting part of the postings was in the actual hardware design. It looks like Microsoft is looking for engineers who will work “metals, ceramics, plastics and thin films.” The current Surface already uses a new method of metal sculpting. A cover involving ceramics would be equally interesting.

TechRadar also notes that one job advert for a mechanical engineer reveals that Microsoft is searching for “understanding of touch display architecture and experience in mechanical integration of large touch displays into electronics products.”

The site concludes that the company may be working on the successor to the 80″ Perceptive Pixel wall screen.

Another job posting shows that Microsoft is also looking for engineers who will work “metals, ceramics, plastics and thin films,” as well as “finishing processes such as paint, plating and PVD”.
