Windows 8 release date slated for October 2012, source claims

Microsoft is rumored to launch its new operating system before the holiday season.

The company hasn’t confirmed the release date, but Bloomberg cites sources saying that the final version of Windows 8 will be completed this summer and released in October.

“If they miss the September-October time frame, they’re going to be stuck without being able to ship anything in 2012,” said Michael Gartenberg, an analyst at Stamford, Connecticut- based Gartner Inc.

“The last thing Microsoft wants to have is a situation where there are no compelling Windows tablets at a time when the new iPad looks like it’s going to be a good seller for the holidays.”

The new operating system will be available for PCs (desktop and laptop) and tablets.

The report indicates that the initial rollout will include devices running Intel and ARM Holdings chips.

The OS is highly anticipated on the market, which is currently monopolized by iOS and Android.

In the meantime, Microsoft lets consumers test Windows 8 with Consumer Preview.
