iPhone 5 feature “innovative display technology,” analyst says

In early January, Charles Moore at The iPhone 5 News Blog speculated that the iPhone 5 might be powered by an A6 CPU.

Citing a post at DigiTimes, Moore wrote that the next iPad models could be the first to use Apple’s quad-core A6 processor. At present, iPad 2 and iPhone 4S feature the dual-core A5.

iPhone 5 could feature liquipel technology

A small U.S. company has created a method of using a “nano” coating of the inside and outside of the iPhone that will protect it if you are clumsy by nature or your job requires you to be near water. This new tech is called Liquipel.

The company, based in Santa Ana, California posted a video on YouTube that shows an iPhone 4 playing a video while submerged in water.

iPhone 5 could be lighter and stronger thanks to Gorilla Glass 2

In anticipation of the future iPhone 5, analysts predicted a future partnership between Apple and Corning, with the presentation of Gorilla Glass 2 at the CES.

“The thinner Gorilla Glass 2 enables slimmer and sleeker devices, brighter images, and greater touch sensitivity,” a press release from Corning stated.

The new Gorilla Glass is up to 20% thinner than the original but it still offers the same strength.

Home button could disappear from the future iPhone

In mid-january, tech sites went abuzz after an iPhone 5 concept-video by designer Kris Groen was posted on the web. The clip showed a device with a 4-inch display in which the home button has been replaced by two separate home bumpers on the side.

The idea behind the concept is that with the future iPhone the user can simply squeeze the size of the phone on the left or right side of the device to use the home button. By squeezing the buttons there a number of functions that the smartphone can perform, with no need to touch the screen.

HzO could make iPhone 5 waterproof

The technology developed by HZO is able to make watertight any electronic component by applying a protective film at the nanometer scale on them during the assembly of a device

“HzO uses a unique coating processes to shield almost anything from water and corrosion damage,” the company said.

“Unlike other water damage solutions, with HzO technology a device is not sealed, water is able to enter. Instead, the electronic components inside the device are coated to provide protection, leaving the device unencumbered and always guarded against unexpected accidents.”

LTE could mean bigger battery for iPhone 5, analyst says

Carlo Raphael Diokno at popherald.com speculated that the next-generation iDevices will have to integrate a heavier battery if they are to feature LTE technology.

Diokno assumed that Apple will need to insert a heavier battery if it plans on introducing Long-Term Evolution to its gadgets in 2012.

The analyst also concluded that if the Cupertino company decides to add either the 4G/3G toggle or 4G, there is a high possibility that the next-gen iPhone and iPad will be thicker due to antenna and the battery.

iPhone 5 will feature 4-inch screen, according to analyst

In a note to his clients, Susquehanna Financial analyst Chris Caso wrote that the iPhone 5 will enter production this year in June, ahead of its fall release, and that it will come with a larger 4 inch screen.

The analyst also predicted that the Cupertino tech giant will shift around 36 million iPhones in the first quarter of 2012.

Sony’s 13-megapixel CMOS image sensor could help make iPhone 5 thinner

Sony’s “next-generation” back-illuminated CMOS image sensor layers the pixel section the formations of back-illuminated structure pixels onto chips that have the circuit section for signal processing.

Two new eight and 13-megapixel sensors equipped with a “unique RGBW Coding” function that allow a higher image and noise quality have been released by Sony. In addition, they feature HDR (high dynamic range) imaging skills, which ensure more dramatic lighting in videos.

This new design seems perfect for thin devices that need to work properly both in and outdoors, and the iPhone is a perfect example in this sense.

The development team, Cocoanutapps, announced the arrival of the update via Twitter.

“GREAT SUCCESS! iOS 5 iTunes finally pwned. Gremlin, Celeste, and YourTube updates for iOS 5 are all ready for beta-testing, await instructions,” the team wrote on Twitter.

Celeste is not a new tweak, it is already available for iOS 4.3 +. However, the last update dates back in August.

Now, the team at Cocoanuts promises to provide a first beta.

Besides Celeste, other tweaks to be updated are YourTube and Gremlin. A first beta of each will come out soon.

YourTube allows you to download videos from the native YouTube application iOS, while Gremlin is a library complementary to Bluetooth.

Last year in July, ZDNet wrote an article in which they detailed Apple’s macroscalar architecture, explaining how the technology could help to improve the processor efficiency.

“The macroscalar processor addresses this problem in a new way: at compile-time it generates contingent secondary instructions so when a data-dependent loop completes the next set of instructions are ready to execute. In effect, it loads another pipeline for, say, completing a loop, so the pipeline remains full whether the loop continues or completes. It can also load a set of sequential instructions that run within or between loops, speeding execution as well.”

The patent summary describes an example of where “a processor receives instructions of a program loop having a vector block and a sequence block intended to be executed after the vector block, where the processor includes multiple slices and each of the slices is capable of executing an instruction of an iteration of the program loop substantially in parallel. For each iteration of the program loop, the processor executes an instruction of the sequence block using one of the slices while executing instructions of the vector block using a remainder of the slices substantially in parallel.”

Here are some examples of software that Apple believes this processor might be featured on in the future:

“Computer software for personal information management; database management software; database synchronization software; character recognition software; voice recognition software; speech to text conversion software; voice-enabled software applications.”

Apple is likely to develop this type of architecture since the company designs its own processors, software and hardware.

Daiwa Securities, an Asian financial services firm, Japan’s second largest securities brokerage, provided a screenshot of the leaked calendar from San Francisco’s Moscone Center, hinting that the event could take place between June 10 and June 15.

Foxconn, Apple’s major product Chinese manufacturer, is hiring tons of Chinese workers amid rumors that iPhone 5 production is starting. According to M.I.C Gadget, thousands of people lined up last Monday outside a labor agency in Zhengzhou, China, in the hope of getting hired by Foxconn.

According to reports, Foxconn plans to expand its workforce with another 100,000 workers. The starting salary is estimated at 1650 Yuan ($261) and after an appraisal it could increase from 2400 to 3200 Yuan (or $379 to $506).

Foxconn is expected to be readying for production of the iPhone 5, rumored to be released this year.

Online petition asks for “ethical” iPhone 5

Consumer watchdog group SumOfUs posted a petition online, asking Apple to “make the iPhone 5 ethically” and “overhaul the way its suppliers treat their workers” before the iPhone 5 is released.

At the end of last year, Apple was rumored to be planning a commemoration of the first anniversary of Steve Jobs’ death with the release of the much-awaited iPhone 5.

According to Apple Biter’s Blog at iPhone5Reviewed.com, Jobs was closely involved with the iPhone 5 in the last days of his life and followed all the steps of the production.

His involvement in the product is expected to make it a “cult classic” at the time of its release, probably in the summer of 2012.

“We find these rumors to be very valid, for the simple fact that Steve Jobs gave utmost importance to the design of Apple products,” the site wrote.

Because of this, the blog speculated that the date of the launch for the iPhone 5could be pushed to October in commemoration of the death of Apple’s co-founder.

NOVEMBER 2011

iPhone 5 and iPad 3 to launch in 2012, report claims

DigiTimes reported in November of last year that an insider claimed that Apple was in the process of ordering “volumes for keyparts and components” for next-generation devices, including the iPhone 5 and iPad 3.

The site speculated that the device is unlikely to be revealed until “the second half of 2012” and that it would be completely redesigned.

Apple to release iPad Mini and 4-inch iPhone 5 in 2012?

Also in November, LG was rumored to be working on displays of 4 inches for the future iPhone 5 and 7.35 inches for the iPad Mini.

The source of this information is a firm named Daiwa Securities, an Asian financial services firm, Japan’s second largest securities brokerage, as quoted by the Commercial Times.

The rumor says that Apple might go back to basics and use the Moscone Center to present its new iPhone at this conference.

The site also provides a screenshot of the leaked calendar from San Francisco’s Moscone Center, hinting that the event could take place between June 10 and June 15.

Based on claims from Daiwa Securities, the site also indicates that the device will use “glass to glass” touch panel technology that will be supplied by TPK Holding and Wintek.

In addition, the blog MacOtakara announces that the iPad 3 will be unveiled in March during a presentation organized by Apple.

Finally, the Cupertino company will hold a “Strange” event in February for an unknown product, which seems odd given that it’s set to take place a few weeks before the release of the iPad.

Apple’s third-generation tablet is expected to hit the market in March, according to latest reports.

Fast Company interviewed Ed McLaughlin, MasterCard’s head of emerging payments, sparking speculation on the technical specifications of the next iPhone.

“The timeline is always as rapid as it makes sense for consumers,” McLaughlin said. “That’s a combination of having a critical mass of the merchants, which is what you’re seeing right now, and getting devices into the hands of consumers. I don’t know of a handset manufacturer that isn’t in process of making sure their stuff is PayPass ready.”

Asked if Apple was one of these manufacturers, McLaughlin hesitated.

“Um, there are…like I say, [I don't know of] any handset maker out there,” he said. “Now, when we have discussions with our partners, and they ask us not to disclose them, we don’t.”

Fast Company‘s Austin Carr chatted with Ed McLaughlin from MasterCard about when payments via mobile devices might become the norm.

In addition, tech site 9to5Mac discussed this issue with a “well-connected developer” currently working on designing an app compatible with NFC.

The developer, whose identity was not revealed, is cited as saying that Apple software engineers are “heavy into NFC.”

Asked what degree of confidence he gave to this information, the developer replied, “Enough to bet the app development on.”

Consumer watchdog group SumOfUs is asking Apple to “make the iPhone 5 ethically” and “overhaul the way its suppliers treat their workers” before the iPhone 5 is released.

More than 35,000 people signed the petition in the first 24 hours it was available, according to SumOfUs.

The petition reads: “Can Apple do this? Absolutely. According to an anonymous Apple executive quoted in The New York Times, all Apple has to do is demand it, and it’ll happen.”

“I use an iPhone myself,” Taren Stinebrickner-Kauffman, executive director of SumOfUs, said in a statement. “I love it, but I don’t love having to support sweatshops, and neither do millions of other Apple consumers. The hip, educated market that Apple aspires to corner is largely composed of responsible consumers who don’t want to be complicit in sweatshop labor.”

Last week, The New York Times reported about the extreme working conditions from Apple’s overseas manufacturers, triggering questions on whether the Cupertino giant is looking solely for profit.

Apple has yet to comment on these reports. However, the company’s CEO Tim Cook reportedly sent an internal memo denying the accusations.

“We care about every worker in our worldwide supply chain. Any accident is deeply troubling, and any issue with working conditions is cause for concern. Any suggestion that we don’t care is patently false and offensive to us,” reads the letter, which was obtained by 9to5Mac.

Here are some of the most popular predictions around Apple’s highly-anticipated fifth-generation iPhone.

The iPhone SJ concept

Antonio De Rosa, founder of ADR Studio, imagined a new concept of the gadget, which he called the iPhone SJ, in memory of Steve Jobs.

The handset appears in De Rosa’s vision with a slightly larger screen and the firm’s logo inlaid on top of the screen, and it integrates the A6 processor with a target of 10 million pixels for the camera.

The display is envisioned by De Rosa as edge-to-edge and it’s a “totally glass capacitive screen on a polycarbonate lightweight body.”

No home button for the future iPhone 5

An iPhone 5 concept-video by designer Kris Groen shows a device with a 4-inch display in which the home button has been replaced by two separate home bumpers on the side.

The idea behind the concept is that with the future iPhone the user can simply squeeze the size of the phone on the left or right side of the device to use the home button.

The squeezing comes naturally since the position of the side buttons is based on the way phones are held.

iPhone 5 could feature quad-core A6 chip

Charles Moore at The iPhone 5 News Blog speculated that the iPhone 5 might be powered by an A6 CPU.

Citing a post at DigiTimes, Moore wrote that the next iPad models will be the first to use Apple’s quad-core A6 processor. At present, iPad 2 and iPhone 4S feature the dual-core A5.

“And if the iPad 3 does indeed turn out to be powered by A6 silicon, it will be a strong indicator that the iPhone 5 will be likewise equipped,” Moore speculates.

iPhone 5 could be launched in first quarter of 2012

According to Alexis Madrigal, a senior editor at The Atlantic, the iPhone 5 “is probably going to come out in the first quarter of 2012,” Madrigal wrote.

In addition, the analyst predicted that the handset will be a trendsetter in the world of tech in 2012.

“I think the release of the iPhone 5 will be the pivot around which the rest of 2012 turns in tech,” he speculated, adding that the smartphone could set “a whole new standard for communications devices.”

Madrigal also predicted that the iPhone 5 “will be a huge deal,” and believed that everyone would “casually mention it in dinner conversations” and “strangers will talk about it on the bus.”

Slimmer iPhone 5 will work on all networks

The iPhone 5 could come with a thinner body due to new touch panel technology and Apple might introduce the device in the quarter ending in June, Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty said.

In addition, Hubert believed that Apple’s next-generation iPhone could include a quad-mode chip from Qualcomm that would allow it to operate on all 3G and LTE networks.

This prediction joined the recent announcement that Verizon requires that all future smartphones released on the carrier support 4G LTE technology.

The analyst also suggested that a new material may be used to build the casing for the iPhone 5.

iPhone 5 will be a “more radical update”

Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu has speculated that Apple’s next smartphone will represent a “more radical refresh” with features such as 4G LTE technology.

“From our checks with supply chain and industry sources and consistent with what we had said in early August, we are picking up that the new iPhone will be a more radical update with a sleeker, thinner form factor, and a slightly larger screen,” Wu wrote.

He added: “In addition, it will likely incorporate 4G LTE technology, which would provide a significant boost in wireless network performance. We believe this significant update keeps the iPhone fresh and competitive and helps maintain its leadership position.”

Wu also speculated on the possibility that Apple could actually get a step ahead of companies offering 4G Android technology due to the fact that the Cupertino company is among the latest to acquire 4G LTE.

LTE could mean bigger battery for the iPhone 5

Carlo Raphael Diokno at popherald.com believes that the next-generation iDevices will have to integrate a heavier battery if they are to feature LTE technology.

Diokno wrote that Apple will need to insert a heavier battery if it plans on introducing Long-Term Evolution to its gadgets in 2012.

The iPhone 5 will sport 4-inch screen

According to Susquehanna Financial analyst Chris Caso, the iPhone 5 will enter production this year in June, ahead of its fall release, and it will come with a larger 4 inch screen.

The news doesn’t come as a surprise given that rumors of a larger screen for the next iPhone appeared late last year.

The analyst also predicts that the Cupertino tech giant will shift around 36 million iPhones in the first quarter of 2012.

iPhone 5 bound for a “monster” launch and release date

In a note sent to investors, Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray talked about the success of the iPhone 4S and speculated that the future iPhone 5 will have a “monster” launch.

“If Apple sells 30 (million)-plus iPhones in Dec., with no new form factor, up from 17.1m in Sept., it would be evidence supporting our survey work indicating that 94% of iPhone users plan to upgrade to a new iPhone,” Munster wrote.

“This theme suggests iPhone 5, which we are expecting in Aug. with a new form factor, will be a monster upgrade.”

Consequently, Munster predicted that 94 percent of the current iPhone owners will upgrade to the iPhone 5.

According to Adam Lashinsky’s new book, Inside Apple, Steve Jobs discussed with Ren Ng, CEO of a company specializing in photography called Lytro, shortly before his death on a partnership with the manufacturer.

The Lytro Light Field Camera has the advantage of being able to adjust its focus and clarity thanks to its multiple lenses, together with a structured grid. Its system of lenses allows it to capture vast fields of light from multiple angles.

But the biggest attraction of Lytro technology is the ability to snap a picture and then adjust the focus.

Lytro is also working on a sensor that aims to capture an image instantly – Apple has optimized the camera of the iPhone 4S so it is particularly fast, but this technology would allow the user to take shots almost on the moment.

Features of Lytro’s camera tech

An important advantage of the technology offered by Lytro is that the images captured with the camera can be edited later on the computer and there the user will be able to focus on the person or the object. The photos are also never blurred.

Tech site computerworld.com has come up with a list of the most interesting features the Lytro camera includes. These are:

- Since it is a “light field” camera, Lytro can record the amount of light traveling in every direction through every point in space.

Apple sales double over the holidays thanks to iPhone and iPad

In the last three months of 2011, the company’s profit reached 13.06 billion dollars, double than the previous year.

At the same time, the tech giant said Tuesday that its sales soared 73% to 46.33 billion dollars, while analysts expected about 39 billion. The results were boosted by Apple’s strong sales of iPhone and iPad during the holiday season.

37 million iPhones were sold over the holidays, summing up 183 million devices snapped by customers since 2007, the year the products hit the market.

In addition, Apple sold 5.2 million Macs in the last quarter, an increase of 26% over the same period last year. As for the iPad, 15.4 million were sold (an increase of 111%) to 15.4 million buyers. Sales of the iPod fell 21% to 15.4 million.
