This would be based on the current SRX and resume part of the system used by the Voltec Chevrolet Volt (electric motor of 149 hp + engine of 1.4 liters of 84 horses for this one) to reduce costs.

The Cadillac, however, should be technologically different from the concept Converj, presented in Detroit in 2009 (a variant of the Chevy) since it will draw profit from work on a crossover plug-in project for Saturn and Buick based on the Theta platform, a project dating from 2008-2009 and abandoned without being made public.

Note that Cadillac SRX was introduced in 2008 as a concept powered by a fuel cell. We should learn more about this in 2011.

It is not about a divorce between the two entities but only a separation brand identities.

The statement comes from a Cadillac spokesman, Nick Twork, which holds that in the near future Cadillac will give up the name of GM into marketing strategies and inside dealers and will not participate in joint actions of the brand. In addition, email addresses will be changed, the extension “@ gm.com” following to change into “@ cadillac.com”.

The strategy made public by U.S. officials is part of the restructuring plan of General Motors and was thought by the new CEO, Ed Whitacre, who is trying to revitalize the brand in Detroit.

Only one year later after reveal Converj concept, at the same Detroit showroom, Cadillac had officially announced they will make a series version of the coupe displayed in 2009. The announcement was made by Bob Lutz, GM president, who said they will make a series coupe.

Nevertheless, the debut date was not revealed, but the model is waited to launch on streets by the end of 2013 and the beginning of 2014. The decision to built a premium coupe on Volt’s platform, are strengthens GM intentions to broad the range of cars with an lower impact upon the environment, thing more and more wanted by the American buyers.

Volt’s hybrid system, called Voltec, offers an autonomy of 65 km in electric mode, this number could be extended with the entry into operation of a conventional engine, which in Converj’s case would be more generous.

Consequently, GM staff say the future coupe will prove GM’s capacity to improve Voltec’s value system. Taking into consideration that the concept revealed last year at Detroit develops 370 Nm and can reach a maximum speed of 160 km/h, it’s likely that the series version to improve these performances.

The Detroit News says that the concept car which shared the power train and lithium-ion battery pack used in the upcoming Chevrolet Volt would be more than just inspiring for the extended-range electric Converj. 

General Motors wants to amortize the cost of expensive system with the shared underpinnings.

Bob Lutz, VC of GM, has said a premium offering with the same technology could allow a higher price tag, another option to offset the cost of the batteries.

Cadillac neither approved nor denied the rumors that the Converj is destined for production, but seeing the new eco-friendly compact offerings from Audi or Lexus, it doesn’t seem that far from truth. The late 2010 is expected to be the start of the production for Converj, as long as the news is correct.
