This is one of the largest collections in the world, particularly representative of the evolution of cars in the past 100 years. The collection is not only a juxtaposition of expensive models, but the selection of brands and models shows the owner’s tasteful choices.

The photo session by Todd Eberle is entitled “Inside Ralph Lauren’s garage,” and it’s really more like a museum than a conventional garage. The presentation of vehicles is particularly simple and elegant. The floor is covered with a black carpet and each vehicle has its own white platform in order to better highlight the model and its condition.

The collection includes many Ferraris, such as a 1958 Testa Rossa, a significant number of Mercedes including several 300SL and a 1930 SSK. There are also two Alfas: a Monza and a 1939 spyder Mille Milia, as well as two Bugatti: a 59 type and a 1934 57SC Atlantic Coupe. A Jaguar XKSS, a Morgan +4 and a 1929 Bentley Tourer can be admired in Luren’s collection.

NASA will investigate the Toyota problems

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) released a press announce detailing its plan to use NASA engineers to discover the general problem of the Toyota cars (not just those mentioned by the Japanese manufacturer).

The prestigious institution National Academy of Sciences, an independent organization that uses leading experts will examine the issue of uncontrolled acceleration generated by electronic components throughout the automotive industry.

Separately, NHTSA has brought NASA engineers who bring a unique expertise on electronically controlled systems, electromagnetic interference and integration software to analyze the unintended acceleration problem of Toyota vehicles.

The American Congress has already held four hearings on Toyota cars which ended up in fatal accidents. Experts can not agree whether the problem is the defects of electronic components. Toyota said its engineers haven’t found any problem in terms of electronics, according to discovery.com.

5% of the Audi sold cars will be electric

About 5% of the total cars that Audi will sell in 2020 will be electric models, believes Michael Dick, one of the German mark’s directors.

Audi sets up until Sunday, at its stand from the Geneva Motor Show, the concept of “A1 e-trone”, an electric version of the fresh class model of small size launched by Audi A1.

A1 e-trone is the third concept 100% electric presented by the manufacturer and also the smaller one.

Last year, at the Frankfurt Motor Show, and in early 2010, at the Detroit Motor Show, Audi displayed other two e-throne concepts, both with sportive claims.

In addition, Audi has decided that one of the sport e-throne concepts to enter into series production in 2012 at the latest.

Even if there isn’t any official announcement concerning this matter, is almost certain that the A1 concept e-throne will make, at a certain time, the step to be a self status model.

Michael Dick told “Automobilwoche” that Audi needs about three years in order to implement the A1 e-trone in the commercial range.

Police in South Africa is looking for Uwe Gemballa, the founder of the German tuning company Gemballa Automobiletechnik.

He disappeared three weeks ago. Uwe Gemballa was supposed to arrive in South Africa, where he intended to open a showroom, on February 8th and return on February 10.

South African police is working with German police to solve the case, said the police spokesman, Vishnu Naidoo.

Rumors say he might was kidnapped. Gemballa asked his wife to send him one million dollars after he had a traffic accident.

Gemballa Automobiletechnik has only 40 employees and builds super cars that end up costing up to $ 700,000.

The company has showrooms in Australia, Europe and United States.

In Germany rumors say that Gemballa’s disappearance would be motivated by difficult financial situation of his company.

Audi might implement transmission with eight speed steps on the whole range

Most of the Audi staff takes into account the implementation of eight-speed transmissions on all models. Automatic transmission with six gears will be replaced by units with eight steps, which provide additional agility and an additional fuel savings.

For now, those at Audi haven’t announced yet how much they will extent or they will remove or replace manual transmission units with eight steps.

Mercedes-Benz is the only manufacturer of cars that managed to equip almost all models in the range of seven-speed automatic transmission.

Customers who want to buy Audi A1 can take their mind off an eight-speed transmission, at least in the coming years because the Ingolstadt manufacturer announced that A3 is the smallest model in the range which will receive a new gearbox with eight steps.

The smallest engine in the Audi range that will be coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmissions is the TFSI unit with 2.0-liter which equip the A3.

Performance figures of these models have not yet been announced, but we can expect that models with an eight-speed automatic transmission to achieve a significant fuel economy.

The new eight-speed automatic transmissions will use, most likely the DSG technology.

Most of the Audi staff should focus on reducing the size and weight of these transmissions, which will equip as well model as A8 and Q7 models, but also smaller models such as A3 and A4.

A seven-speed DSG transmission has a mass of about 77 kilograms, while the first generation DSG – the six gears – has a mass of 93 kilograms.

Desk high 100 DSG transmission is caused by the fact that the clutch is wet and fluids used increase considerable the weight.

An equivalent transmission with converter weighs is about 85 kilograms, while a manual gearbox with five or six-speed has a mass of around 40 kilograms.

Toyota could redesign the power button of engine of its models

Toyota could change how the button works, which starts and stops the models’ engine which are equipped with this feature.

At present, the power and stop button of engine from Toyota cars starts the engine at first touch and stops at a continuing push of three seconds.

It seems that this mode is not intuitive enough so that the Japanese want to change the functioning of the button in order to allow the engine to stop engine in running if an emergency occurs.

Those from Toyota will make the start and stop button to stop the engine if that button is touched three times in a row.

According to security experts, allowing the driver to stop the engine while walking through consecutive press of the power button could avoid accidents caused by blocking the accelerator pedal.

The changes will be made on new vehicles, not on those cars already produced by Toyota. Thus, Toyota will not work on a recall to modify the power button of cars.

Keyless start systems are a potential factor for sudden unintended acceleration, say safety experts.

The most worrying thing for safety experts is that the number of vehicles equipped with keyless start system tripled in the last five years, there are currently 155 models sold in the United States of America which are equipped with this system.

One of Toyota’s engineer announced that plug-in hybrid cars will reduce their prices to an accessible level, so that the notoriety of this model to grow.

Yoshikazu Tanaka, one of Toyota’s chief engineers has great plans for the future generation of plug-in hybrid cars. “ I want to make the car accessible as price setting a price that a large number of costumers will afford. The nickel metal batteries existent on current Prius offers the car an autonomy of 2-3km using only electric engine, while lithium-ion batteries which can be use in the future for plug-in hybrids, offering an autonomy of 23 km per a single charge.

Toyota staff said that hybrid cars will dominate the ecological cars market more than 10 years, and Japanese plans to extend the hybrid range.

After Volkswagen bought 19.9% of Suzuki shares, the Japanese wants to pass from diesel current generation, taken by Renault and Peugeot, to TDI engines provided by VW.

After VW bought 19.9% from Suzuki and the two parts announced a partnership which consists in collaborations of technological matters, and Japanese will build cars with TDI engines.

Osamu Suzuki, Suzuki’s general director, announced they will review partnerships with Renault and PSA group, and also their intention to buy diesel engines from VW.

The Japanese car manufacturer of small class and SUV of small sizes has some relations to Japanese producers and delivers rebranded versions of their own models and other models, under OEM license.

Despite the close relations in researching and development, the two brands plans to keep their selling networks separate. Moreover, Suzuki won’t use VW’s distribution network from North America or China and neither VW won’t do the same thing in India.

It seems that, Maruti-Suzuki has the bigger number of cars sold in India, and VW is the best auto brand sold in China.
